UK campaigners slam Suez water company’s threat to sue Bolivia
Campaigners in the UK, and across the world held protests today to condemn the French multinational, Suez for threatening to sue Bolivia for loss of income after it was kicked out of the Bolivian city of El Alto for failing to deliver clean and adequate water supplies.
Peter Hardstaff of the World Development Movement said “Water privatisation, often forced on the poorest countries by the IMF and World Bank, has failed to deliver clean water and sanitation in country after country. Dirty water kills. By kicking out water multinationals such as Suez, poor communities are only acting in self defence. It is time that the global experiment with water privatisation, supported by the UK Government, was abandoned.”
