Hmmm, fascinating. I will pass this on to my dad and sister, both into urban spaces and planning... :-) I can love the mania of Manila, the loneliness of London's back streets and the order of rational planning. Oh dear, looks like another place for me to visit :-)

That's a long discussion... I'm from Brasilia, but lived in Barcelona, Lisbon and other brazilian cities. The problem is: people go to Brasilia expecting the same you see in million other cities. And get upset about what they find. But you just can't compare. It's a unique experience, a love-or-hate experience. Besides, Brasilia has only 46 years! People from all over the country came to this dream, and the city identy still undefined, I think. Maybe if you come back an stay a little longer you be able to understand the complexity of this place and experience the wonderful good things that the city has. The city without soul will be always waiting with a warmly open heart. :)

"But for me, that is not what a city is about. Cities are about tangled histories, intriguing dark corners, erratically different neighbourhoods, the irrational and the untidy."

To me that sounds like a description of Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá.
