Cerro Rico Pachamama

Cerro Rico Pachamama

This painting captures colonial-indigenous sycrentism with the Virgin Mary inside Cerro Rico (the mountain full of silver behind Potosi) yet her merging with the landscape suggests Pachamama (the Andean goddess of earth and creation). On either side of her are the sun and moon, key to the Andean cosmology. On the mountain you can see the indigenous man attributed for finding the silver and below the Spanish king and the Pope giving thanks for the huge wealth it generated for Europe
