Xango

Xango

Afro-Brazilian museum, Salvador

Xango is the one of the most popular Candomble divinities (or orishas). He is the God of thunder and formerly King of the Yoruban kingdom of Oio in Nigeria. This was carved along with 12 other gorgeous panels by the sculptor/artist Carybe who was born in Argentina (from an Italian mother and Brazilian father) but became a fully integrated and loved Bahian who died in the 1990s. His commissioned art can be found all over Salvador city.
