Sons of Gandhi

Sons of Gandhi

Salvador

The carnival in both Rio and Salvador were made up of blocos - big groups of musicians and dancers and hangers-on who gather around the vast truck-driven mega-sound systems. Led usually by a band and a charismatic singer wearing very little up on the float, the blocos dance and parade through the streets for hours without ever seeming to get tired. One of the biggest groups in Salvador are the "sons of Gandhi" who dress in distinctive blue and white robes with turbans. I have no idea of their origins, but they have been going for 56 years, and still have a lot of symbols and banners calling for peace.
