Marcus Arruda

Porto Alegre

Marcus Arruda is a Workers Party activist (PT) which is the party of the President of Brazil, Luis Lula Ignacio da Silva. Marcos played a key role in Jubilee Brazil and in particular in organising the referendum on debt in August 2000 when more than 5 million people voted against debt payments and a deal with the IMF. He is still active in the party but talked of growing disillusion with Lula for continuing free-market economic policies, refusing to meet with civil society movements and for his slow progress in tackling the vast wealth divide in Brazil
