Time for mass

Time for mass

I arrived in San Rafael on the only bus that day just in time to see this boy ringing out the bells for the start of mass. The service was like any other mass I have been to in Latin America until the bread and wine was served. Suddenly drums struck up an infectious rhythm accompanied by a haunting scratching of violins and bells, that sounded like music from another time. I found out later it was indigenous music that was initially banned as 'pagan' by the Jesuits but later incorporated into worship.
